Vaccines

October 19, 2009 by Alicia Cleaver, D.O.

I got my vaccines today.  I only had to get 3- a lot less than I thought I’d have to.  Hepatitis A #1 of 2, polio, and tetanus w/ a pertussis booster were the only ones needed.  I already had Hepatitis B #1-3 and Dr. Bowling said that we wouldn’t need yellow fever.  Typhoid is now in an oral form so my wimpy self elected to do oral instead of the shot.  The oral lasts 5 years as opposed to 2 years like the shot so it’s better all the way around.  I also got prescriptions for malaria prophylaxis (Malarone) and a just-in-case prescription that I would use if I accidentally drank the water or ate a salad or something and got sick- hopefully won’t have to use this one.  I’ll need to get tested for tuberculosis before I leave and again when I get back and that’ll catch me up on preventing infectious tropical diseases.
